During the Christmas holidays, the number of deaths due to drunk drivers increases by 34%

What can you do to stay safe this holiday season?

The holidays are a time of colorful lights, gift exchanges and festive parties. They are also, however, a time for significant increased risk for encountering drunk drivers on the road. While the numbers vary from year to year, according to Edmunds.com, an average of 343 people die in traffic accidents during the 3 day Christmas holiday each year.

The number increases over the New Year’s Holiday, according to the National Council on Safety, with an average of 373 motor vehicle deaths occurring over this period. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 25,000 traffic injuries will result from accidents where alcohol was a factor. While enjoying this holiday season with your loved ones, it’s important to be aware of the extra risks during the season and take appropriate precautions.

  • Weaving or zig zagging
  • Slowed reaction time
  • Speeding up and slowing down
  • Driving outside the lines
  • Driving too slowly
  • Driving with headlights off
  • Turning illegally or the wrong way down a one way street

If you see a driver who appears to be impaired, stay as far away as possible. Do not attempt to pass or get the driver’s attention. Pull over to the side of the road and dial 911. Be ready to explain why you think the driver is impaired, where you saw them and which direction they were travelling.

The holidays are full of parties and festive time of year that everyone enjoys. Taking extra precautions and keeping these tips in mind will reduce your risk of becoming involved in a drunk driver related accident this holiday season.
